Author: Deepika Shetty Price: SGD 26.75 including GST USD 19.99 INR: 349/- (available at Chamiers, Chennai, India) Sanchit Art Publications Available at TheSandalwood Room, 76, Prinsep Street, Singapore An apt title - It actually gives the scooter and the helmet a place in the period of the novel: two wheelers gave not only India a huge impetus economically; they also liberated women: Women use them now for everything from commuting to work to shopping, banking, taking children to school… The protagonist “D” is liberated with her first scooty: And romance takes wings with the birthday gift given her by the hero- Shetty Its about growing up in Chandigarh in India in the 80s and 90s; A sunny childhood turned dark and gloomy; about pen-pals, friendships, love affairs, college, first jobs, family and finally finding love and settling down in a distant land. Deepika Shetty says she researched the Indian writing set in this period and did not find a single light hearted romance. The romance is certainly light hearted, but the setting is heavy: The anti Sikh riots, a child witnessing violence, and as a result being thrown into a tyrannical home from the safe haven of a loving family and struggling to see value in herself and to escape what she sees as a home empty of any expression of love and a controlling grandmother. The style is first person, defiant but a little resigned. The flow is “breathless” and it is difficult to track the swift leaps from past to present. But it compels one to go back to the book and read it again, if only in bits and pieces. Its interesting to read that ‘D’ while expressing frustration continuously, NEVER expresses hatred for her tyrannical grandmother. NEVER curses her. She is looking for escape, but not with anger. That is astonishing maturity in one so young. Peppered with interesting characters who shape D’s life and thinking, many situations beg for a Bollywood expression in this book. While on the movie subject, Deepika says she would love for Deepika Padukone to play the lead, but she is rather too tall; Her choice is for Konkana Sen Sharma. She is happy for the director to choose all other actors. The predominant response from many readers seems to be inordinate curiosity about what’s fact and what’s not. I think, though, that if the author elicits such a response she has been successful; it means they are living the experiences with her through the book. What more can an author ask for? Deepika Shetty has no plans currently to get the book translated, though personally I think it would do very well translated into Indian languages. Millions of women would identify with “D” About Deepika Shetty - Visual arts. Museum shows. Bollywood. During seven years as Arts Correspondent for Singapore's The Straits Times,Deepika has developed and shaped the newspaper's coverage for these beats. Before this, she spent six years in television, anchoring a weekly segment on books for Channel NewsAsia's breakfast show, Prime Time Morning, where she was a producer. In India, she worked for The Times of India and India Today. On the literary front, she has moderated at several key literary festivals in Australia as well as Ubud, Galle and Singapore. |
