Indigo, is also known as Indigotin. Original term of indigo is Indicum meaning from India. However the plant is widespread around the world. It is also known as Nil in Arabic and Aniline in English. The leaves of the plant impart a deep blue colour. During dyeing, cotton and linen threads require 15-20 times of soaking and drying while silk threads need around 40 times of dying. The beauty of indigo is in the penetration of the dye into the threads. The surface is deeply coloured while it fades as the thread unwinds. Thus it was used to colour denim. The Levi jeans popularized blue and demand for indigo soared. This gave rise to the need to research and produce synthetic indigo dye. Today all indigo dyes are synthetic.
