When I walked into the converted Shophouse boutique on Prinsep Street, just off Selegie Road in Singapore, I was met with an eclectic mix of merchandise: home decor, curios, fine crafts, artifacts, designer wear and hand crafted jewelry.
The lovely Jay and her team had invited me for the inaugural art show (there is also an art gallery which hosts temporary exhibitions by international artists). Selling a variety of home decor and gift items from cushions, quilts, stoles and cotton clothes to designer tableware, Jay, an engineering graduate and former Managing Director of a reputed engineering firm in India has a passion for all things beautiful! This was evident right from the courtyard where she has installed an elaborately hand carved antique door to a beautiful ornamental swing inside. What impressed me most was her overwhelming commitment on protecting the environment and the fact that she goes to great lengths to source her goods from grassroots level.
I met Jay last week when I dropped in for the ‘Grand Diwali Sale’ (going on till Nov 9, don’t miss it) to pick up a few gifts for friends and relatives, I learnt she was planning to move to a new place. I guess sometimes the business outgrows the location and relocating is a way to expand and to reach new markets.
One thing is for sure, she is not going to be losing loyal customers who seek character in their gift-giving or enjoy The Sandalwood Room's atmosphere of art, beauty, culture and harmony.
