Indians have been using homespun cotton and natural fibers like silk & wool for weaving their garments since ancient times. The ancient Indian cotton-fabric Muslin was crafted by using natural fibers such as cotton, silks, linen and wool. This was hand woven and considered one of the unique creations of Indian weavers. Chintz (stained calico printed with flowers) was imported from India to Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.
Apart from making cloth, Indian weavers are experts in weaving rugs, blankets and other products. Weaving is one of the largest cottage industries and Indian hand woven fabrics are world renowned. Types of weaving found in India include cotton fabrics, carpet weaving, embroidery, sarees, hand block printing, etc. The type of weaving is associated with the region it comes from: Madras Checks and Kanchipuram from Tamil Nadu; Ikat from Andhra Pradesh; Balarampuram from Kerala in the South, Taant, Daccai, Jamdani from West Bengal in the West; Pashmina in Kashmir; Brocade and Jacquards from Uttar Pradhesh in the North; Chanderi from Madhya Pradesh in Central India; and Patola from Gujarat in the East. Other famous fabrics include Benarasi, Baluchar, Surat Tanchoi and Tusser, to name a few. The traditional motifs, patterns, designs, and weaving techniques are employed by the weavers even today. What’s more, traditional Indian weaving is not only exquisite but eco-friendly as well. Block printing was particularly widespread before the advent of mechanized printing of fabric but today it is a dying art form used by textile artists. The art of block printing was practiced in India for several centuries and was passed on from one generation to another, until the advent of power looms and chemical dyes when the demand for this time consuming art declined.
The blocks used in this type of printing is usually made of carved teak wood. The design and carving on the block is done by hand. The carved block is dipped into the required color (usually natural dyes derived from plant sources or non-toxic chemical dyes are also used) to design the fabric. A block to which color has been applied is placed on the fabric and pressed. The number of blocks used for printing depend on the pattern as each colour requires a separate block. The printed fabric usually takes 2 to 3 days to dry. The Sandalwood Room at Prinsep Street, Singapore has a fabulous collection of block printed creations! |
